Mango Markets operator sentenced to more than 4 years for pedophilia
Avraham Eisenberg received a sentence of more than four years in prison for child pornography, unrelated to the 2022 Mango Markets attack, which cost the decentralized exchange about $100 million. Eisenberg was sentenced to 52 months in prison during his May 1 trial in the Southern District Court of New York. The case was filed in April 2024, after Eisenberg was charged with fraud because of the incident at Mango Markets.
In October 2022, Mango Markets was manipulated through oracle prices, causing significant losses for users. The Mango token (MNGO) dropped 52% in value after the hack, leading to a suspension of deposits. Eisenberg defended his actions, calling it a "legal market action" and claimed to have negotiated to repay the funds after the exchange's insurance fund failed to compensate.
In December 2022, Eisenberg was arrested in Puerto Rico on charges of fraud and commodity manipulation. A jury found Eisenberg guilty of fraud and deception in April 2024. The defense attorney argued that this was not a cybercrime, but rather a legitimate and successful trading strategy.
In an effort to defend himself, Eisenberg proposed a plea deal after the verdict, but was strongly opposed by the U.S. prosecution, asserting that the crime had been accurately determined based on a clear analysis of the evidence. This case highlights the increasing monitoring and arrest of hackers in the cryptocurrency industry, as platforms and users face growing threats from malicious cyber attacks.
