Future Trends of Layer-1 Public Chains: zkRollup Technology Leading the Rise of Omnichain Ecosystems

Future Development Trends of Layer-1 Public Chains

There are many Layer-1 projects in the blockchain industry, including well-known public chains such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and BNB Chain. Despite the fierce competition, new L1 public chains with unique advantages continue to emerge, and technological iterations have never stopped. The industry expects that most Layer 1 projects, including Aptos and Sui, will adopt zkRollup technology based on zkEVM in the future, ultimately forming an Omnichain zkRollup ecosystem.

Why will Aptos/Sui eventually embrace zkEVM-based zkRollup?

Aptos/Sui and Move Smart Contract Language

In 2022, the most notable emerging public chains are Aptos and Sui, which use the Move smart contract language. These projects were initiated by engineers who were involved in the development of Diem (formerly Libra), inheriting many features of Diem while differing from existing L1 public chains in terms of performance, programming language, and mechanisms.

One of the prominent features of the Move language is its unique "module structure" design, which allows assets such as tokens, NFTs, and smart contracts to be defined in a concise modular way through a single data module. This is something that the Ethereum EVM struggles to achieve. For example, the Move language employs a resource-based approach, fundamentally avoiding the reentrancy attack issues that have long plagued the EVM ecosystem.

However, whether Aptos/Sui can become a mainstream public chain depends not only on the language it adopts, but more importantly, on the innovative capabilities of future on-chain projects. Currently, while these new public chains have advanced technology, they still lack sufficient application and traffic support. For public chains, technological innovation is indeed important, but the feedback of on-chain projects to the traffic of the public chain is also indispensable.

To capture the huge traffic of the EVM ecosystem, Aptos and Sui are likely to embrace the EVM ecosystem and Layer 2 networks in the future, especially the advanced zkRollup technology based on zkEVM.

Building zkEVM-based zkRollup on Aptos/Sui

In the long run, zkRollup will become an efficient and secure scaling solution. Theoretically, zkRollup can be deployed on any network that can verify its submission proof, so building a zkEVM zkRollup on Aptos/Sui is entirely feasible.

The main advantage of this approach is:

  1. Attract developers and users from the EVM ecosystem.
  2. Reduce the cost for developers to migrate products from the EVM ecosystem to Aptos/Sui.
  3. Provide users with a more affordable or even fee-less transaction experience.
  4. Provide interaction speed and cost models close to traditional applications.

To build a zkEVM-based zkRollup on Aptos/Sui, the following key components are required:

  1. Sequencer: Responsible for receiving transactions and executing them through EVM nodes, generating easily provable execution records.
  2. zkProver: Equipped with zk-EVM functionality, verifies the correctness of execution records and generates zero-knowledge proofs.
  3. Smart Contracts: Including asset custody contracts, proof verification contracts, and governance contracts, which respectively manage asset flow, verify proofs, and handle permission issues.

The Future of Omnichain zkRollup

With the diversified development of the Web3 network ecosystem, the coexistence of multiple public chains will become the norm, and the demand for cross-chain assets and interactions is growing increasingly. Traditional cross-chain bridges face efficiency and complexity issues as the number of chains increases, therefore Omnichain zkRollup is expected to become the ultimate solution for cross-chain and even full-chain applications.

Omnichain zkRollup integrates the Omnichain Interoperation Protocol on the basis of a general-purpose zkEVM-based zkRollup, forming an execution layer that gathers liquidity from all chain assets. It ensures the correctness of transactions through zero-knowledge proofs and enjoys security equivalent to the totality of all chains.

On the Omnichain zkRollup, users can achieve fully programmable interactions of assets and information from various chains. This technology will provide a broad platform for innovative applications such as decentralized exchanges, cross-chain GameFi, and SocialFi, opening up more diversified and borderless application scenarios.
